The bandmate's name is Danny Fujikawa, and he is formerly of Chief, an indie-pop band from Southern California that went kersplitzky last June due to "personal and musical differences." He was in that band with one of his brothers and two other dudes. I listened to their one record and while it was ok it did not light up my world. (There was one song I really liked and several I wouldn't mind listening to while waiting for another act to come on. They got as far as "not a terrible way to spend half an hour.")

(He is also apparently Ryan's roommate.)

He also has written a song with Ryan before, for TYV, which was Young Veins (Die Tonight), which I rather liked, so that's also promising.

And yes he did also have a hand in "Light Brown," which for those of you who missed it when it surfaced a week or so ago, is less of a song and more of a "hey, let's dick around with a synthesizer and a microphone and make the internets lose their minds!"

Light Brown feat Ryan Ross and Danny Fujikawa by DJShaneMorris

Meanwhile, Danny was on twitter at @gymcarrey and has so far been a very good sport about, uh, everything. And by "good sport" I mean, has already used Twitter to flirt with Ryan, followed two fans, and rolled with the inevitable queries about if he's dating Ryan. (Answer: No.) (Dear fandom: please don't ruin it. okay? please? xo sailor)

He has even uploaded one of his own songs so we can listen to it. THIS I'm totally digging. (Note: The synths are echoey and choppy on purpose.)

JJAMZ video!

Warnings: tasteful female quasi-nudity, smoking, alcohol use, and cute girls with guns.

Record to be called Suicide Pact and is expected July 10!!

Dept of Birthday Greetings, 2012 edition: JWalk tweeted Bden a greeting, noting that he would call but has no phone, would email but doesn't have Brendon's email address. [ed: I kind of rolled my eyes at that one. That level of passive-aggressive is a talent, y'all.]

as of nearly midnight Eastern time, he's the only one (that I'm subscribed to, anyway) aside from Brendon to comment on the day, and all Brendon did was thank Decently Funny dudes for their birthday wishes.

Drama Code: Pale blue / lukewarm tea from fancy teapot.

Other JWalk news, probably medium-juicy )
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
JJAMZ playing Wear Your Love Like Heaven by Donovan on TV (IDK how long that link will be good, but there it is if you want to watch it.)

They are apparently doing another song tomorrow morning at 9 AM PST; I'll see if anyone grabs it.

Other news: RECORD!!! on July 10. It will be called Suicide Pact. Plus some shows in the meanwhile. (Heads up, Los Angeles!)

also jjamz is on instagram now as jjamzmusic.
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
- Ryan sparked up again briefly to tweet a mostly pitch-black picture of his bedroom while issuing a toothless threat to stay in bed until verified by Twitter and also to talk to a few fans.

- In one of the fan conversations he confirmed TYV will not be getting back together BUT there will be new music soon. I assume he means from him. So I guess that's the final nail in TYV's coffin, you guys. :(

- He also noted that he could just brush his teeth for hours. (I think I enjoy his non-sequitours more than his news.)

- Today he tweeted a link to the most depressingly awful video ever, of a disapproving mother haranguing her musician son for socializing and sharing his music on the internet. It was so sad. Poor kid. :((

- JJAMZ is playing live on TV today. I can't get the intertubes to cooperate to let me watch it so hopefully someone will grab it.

- Jon's animals have fleas. :( poor kitties & puppy.

- Ryan was, it seemed, rolling along pretty well with recording, but he hasn't mentioned anything about it for a while.

- He also seems to have style-shifted to jeans/leather jacket ('80s Lennon?).

- Other picture notes: one of himself wearing a sabretooth skull as a hat; one of him with Kate and some fake blood; a couple of him and Dan Keyes, including two from an oscar party; one of him, Dan Keyes and Ryland in an el camino; and one of him at a carwash. In the last one he's discovered how to use the effects buttons on Instagram, because there's a black bar over his eyes and an ostrich, a knocked over pill bottle, an icecream cone, and a small child pasted into the image.

- Finally, he asked The Internets when spring break was for LA high schools and colleges. The Internets was baffled by this query. He has not elaborated further.

- JJAMZ's record is OFFICIALLY FINISHED! Mastered and everything! Still no word about a release date, though.

- Keltie was informed (by a third party) of more of Ryan's misdeeds and has declared "he's dead to me." Uh. I guess that means they're not sharing the dog anymore? IDK.

- Brendon, Spencer and Dallon seem to back in the studio; Ian may or may not be with them, I'm not sure.
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
- For those of you not subscribed to his/his wife's Tumblr, I think they are about halfway through their Costa Rican adventure.

- I currently have a nickel on them either a) never coming home or b) coming home for the summer and then going right back, possibly for good.

- He tweeted the following Thursday night: "and I'm not in panic at the disco anymore. and the young veins didn't work out. and climate change is a serious problem." Well. I guess that clears up any possible ambiguity on the TYV front.

- He is working on a record while in Costa Rica. He also made a video for Here for You which I suggest you watch with the sound off; the pictures are from their Costa Rican adventure and are very pretty.

I should maybe call this Today In: The Sphinx Speaks!

Ryan Ross sparked up last night and got really chatty with fans on Twitter and the following emerged:

- He's in a band! (name not given; "for now call it Something Else")
- With other people! (that he didn't name, but I have a feeling includes Greenwald)
- The kind of music they make is, variously, "Apocalypse Rock" "if LMFAO were bad dressers" and "the soundtrack for the end of the world".
- There will be music soon but not too soon.

He also noted that he needed a new nanny. I am assuming he meant for himself/it was just wry commentary.

In other news:

- Phantom Planet have reunited and are playing two shows in LA in June.
- Panic! has finished their UK tour and will be heading back into the studio.
- The Hush Sound have also gotten back together for at least one show
- JJAMZ is recording an album. (I thought they had done this last summer; Michael Runion mentioned sending something off to be mixed. Maybe they didn't like what they got back? IDK.)
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
so . . . possibly shit did get real?

in other news:

* Ryan is apparently committed to replying to people on Twitter; so far he has admired some puppies, indicated he will be touring in his new record when it is finished (yay!!!) and that he doesn't much care for Skrillex.

* He also shared a picture of himself looking unfairly dignified while barefoot, wearing a skeleton print onesie (or else just pajamaas) and cuddling Hobo.

* Spencer does indeed have a new ladyfriend, and they have been together "about two months". (cf. the DecentlyFunny podcast yesterday.)

quick notes

- JWalk - still in Costa Rica! Judging by their Tumblr, he and his wife seem to be having a good time there.

- Ryan Rossy - has suddenly sparked up in a way that is startling - in addition to his usual ebb and flow of general chatter, he's started actually replying to fans. (he's also confirmed he's currently making new music. WHEEEEEE!) I feel a bit like the Sphinx has stood up on its four paws, stretched its great back, and asked me for a cup of tea.

- Other canonical data points:

* Ryan seems to have spent most of this Christmas with Greenwald, Vicky-T, and, hilariously, Zooey Deschanel, though he did also pop up in the background of pictures taken at the JJAMZ Christmas show. He shared a bunch of pictures that were of himself, alone, or himself with Greenwald.

* Z seems to be the main user of the JJAMZ twitter; the second-to-last picture she shared was of herself "vibing with a dingo," in which she also seems to have brown hair. People do have pet dingos (yes, really, and the dog is on a leash) and the hair could be a trick of the light, but I've stuck a "did shit get real? did she dye her hair and fuck off to Australia?" pin in that situation just the same. (That said I'm presuming pet dingo and/or tricks of light until it is conclusively proved otherwise.) The last pictures she linked to were Cobrasnake pictures. (Her hair is blonde in those shots.)

* This is the period which we shall remember as That Time Brendon Was A Dick On Twitter. Here is hoping that it will be over soon.

* Sarah O., Brendon's fiancee', was mistaken for Katy Perry and thus her NYE with Brendon (& friends) was reported as being KP's NYE, much to Sarah O.'s rueful entertainment. (Context: KP announced her impending divorce not long before the holidays, and so there was some pearl-clutching in the press about her going out and having fun with a mystery man, etc etc, only, KP was actually Sarah O. and the "mystery man" was Brendon. KP herself was in Hawaii for the night. WHOOPS!)

Also, will there be a pop cultural singularity if somehow Sarah O., KP and Zooey Deschanel all end up in the same room at the same time? I feel like they could have some fun with that situation. I know I would. In fact my response would be DUDES! LET'S ALL SWITCH CLOTHES AND HAIRSTYLES AND SEE WHOSE PUBLICIST CRACKS FIRST!

(This is also known as, Why It's a Good Thing I'm Not Famous.)

(Also, they if they could wrangle Brendon, Darren Criss (or Rachel Maddow!), and Blake Harnage from VersaEmerge in there with them, they could attempt a six-way fake-out!)

* In other news, Keltie got engaged shortly before Christmas. Her ring is enormous.

* This is also the period we shall know as That Time Spencer Started Tweeting All of His Favorite Hip-Hop Lyrics Whenever He Felt Like It. Also, a friend of his who is a lady (who may or may not be his ladyfriend) gave him a full set of California Raisins (as in, Heard It Through The Grapevine) for Christmas. I am MAD JEALOUS, you guys. That is an epically awesome present.

* Brendon got his tattoos touched up, so his flowers really pop now.

this really is very much a "file under: check back here now and again" kind of thing, HOWEVER, sometime in the last couple of months JWalk tweeted at Ryan something along the lines of "tried to email you and it bounced, is yr address still" (and I burst into helpless laughter on the street and said something like not any more it's not! but also kind of reckoned that the whole thing was JWalk's attempt at, idk, teasing, or a joke, or, idk, something, the ways of JWalk are sometimes inscrutable) and then ryan rossy answered him with something like "got hacked and lost some stuff send it again" and then restated the address.

(mind you, this was after Pete tweeted "the password is password" and Ryan's very next tweet was one where he was cranky about someone . . . changing his password. part of me says: coincidence. part of me says: probably not, because in bandom the most ridiculous explanation is ALWAYS the right one.)

and I made a thoughtful noise. because . . . logic suggests that that is ryan playing along, or some sort of code, or idk, whatever, you get the idea. Not real, is my point here.

but, out of morbid curiosity, i checked to see what might be, figuring some poor exotic pet blog was baffled by a sudden flood of traffic / email / baffling ILU RYAN ROSS comments, and found 1) it existed 2) the only thing on it was this )

And I made another thoughtful noise, because of Alex Greenwald and his obsession with the letter A, and I though Alex = Axolotl? and wondered if, maybe, it was related to whatever they have been working on . . . hmmmmmm.

Now and again I check back in, just to see if there have been any changes. Right now the page is coming back with a database connection error message. I'll check in again after the holidays and see if anything further has developed.

also, here is a better picture of an Axolotl.

According to his FB and music Tumblr, he and his wife have moved to Costa Rica for six months and are "doing some writing, reading and thinking." (And also learning Spanish.) They are, I am not making this up, apparently living in a cabin formerly owned by an eccentric Italian nudist.

Updates will be on should any of you be interested. The "journal" excerpt up right now appears to be from Cassie's journal, not his, and I'm expecting both of them will be updating in the future.

Information on Costa Rica: Wikipedia ; Offical Tourism Site .

Short version: It's one of the few, if not the only, stable democracies / countries in Central America. The Army was abolished (!) in 1949 and there's a 94% literacy rate. Education and health care are good. They're working towards becoming a carbon neutral nation. Tourism is (obviously) a major industry and ecotourism is particularly big, also key are pharmaceuticals, financial outsourcing, and software development; the three biggest cash crops are coffee, bananas and pineapples.

Basically, JWalk has chosen his escape wisely. The weather is tropical and should be delightful as the "dry" (non-hurricane) season is from December to April.

I am still kind of boggling a little bit, because he upped and moved to Costa Rica, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to reading about his (their) experiences there.

Didier Wampas is going on tour for his solo record at the end of November / early December and as best I can tell, Ryan Ross is NOT, repeat, NOT, going to be with him, as was suggested earlier this year. Instead there is yet a different French band, the Bikini Machine, who will be playing with him.

I'm basing this inference on this article: hxxp://

My French is very bad, and Google translate generally makes a bit of a hash of things, but I THINK it says that he's brought Bikini Machine in to be his touring band.

If any of you are French / can read it beyond a kindergarten/1st grade level, please let me know if I'm missing anything.

And this is a teaser video for the tour, wherein the Bikini Machine are playing with Didier:

Note: While I think it is possible to read between the lines of JWalk's lyrics and glean some insight into TYV's implosion, I also strongly encourage y'all to take my insights with a shaker of salt, as they are all conjecture.

(I also encourage you to discuss in the comments.)

I don't think there's anything here that he hasn't said in interviews, or we couldn't have worked out from what he said in interviews, i.e. that the Panic! split "reverberated" through his (JW's) relationship with Ryan, that he and Ryan were on different pages personally and professionally, etc.

Without further preface, here are the lyrics for a selection of tunes from "New Songs" as presented on Facebook, in order of appearance on the record:

Skipping over #1 (End of the World) to song #2, Side of Me ) which JW has already indicated (on stage) was about the demise of one of his previous bands. At the time he mentioned it, if I remember right, it was supposed to be about the Panic! split. Though I suspect it could apply to TYV as well.

Song #3 is Fairytale ) The bolded bits read, to me, reads like either an allusion to either the initial Panic! split, and the related internal struggles, OR to difficulties they had in deciding what to do with TYV after the initial "Fuck you!" "No, fuck YOU!" rage adrenaline from the original split wore off.

I mean, when you have, let us say, started a band to prove a point, and . . . kind of proved it, I guess, in the sense that Take a Vacation! got reasonably good reviews (I don't know how well it sold, in relation to Pretty. Odd.) and enough buzz to fuel two national tours, and then it's time for Round Two, and maybe you aren't all THAT angry any more, or whatever . . . idk, to me this just sounds deeply frustrated.

Skipping over #4 (Illusions to #5 Breathe ) which could probably be summarized as RYAN ROSSY I CANNOT DEAL WITH YOU ANYMORE YOU ARE TURNING MY HEAD SIDEWAYS GOODBYE XO JW.

It's followed by #6, You'll Be Fine ) which caused me to arch an eyebrow at my computer and wonder if Ryan was perhaps taking the (original) split harder than we thought.

#7 is Waiting for a Ghost ) and it's all sort of Eeyore-y "I knew this would happen, I just didn't want to admit it"; the lines I bolded were the ones that thought were kind of sad and also completely ridiculous at the same time.

Jumping over #8 (The Truth) and #9 (Hidden Love) there is #10 Here for You ); the bolded verse is the one I thought was most relevant, as a kind of final, bittersweet farewell.
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
maybe i should just do a monthly "notes for the record" post? idk.

so, Panic! is headed home from tour. This is the era we shall look back on as "that time Brendon was bizarrely over-sharing about his Mom at every opportunity", "the time Dallon trolled someone in the airport into thinking he was a member of Kings of Leon" and, last but not least, "the time Spencer played a show in his underpants and it was glorious."

They are now (according to their show calendar on their website) home until after the holidays, when they will do a lightening-fast UK tour before, allegedly and per Zack talking to fans, be heading back into the studio for Album #4.

other things that have happened:

- Didier Wampas' solo record (aka Ryan's French musical adventure) ALSO came out, and it is DELICIOUS. Ryan sings on a couple of songs, mostly background woah-woahs and similar, but he does sing a word (only one, but still!) in French on one song (Eternellement). Songs he is on: Eternellement, Chanteur de droite and Les framboises dorées.

- Jon Walker put out a record and on the whole it honestly made me want to claw my face off. I am, therefore, not going to say anything else, as everything I have to say is catty, mean, or both. That said: a close reading of his lyrics may be illuminating re: the collapse of TYV. Since releasing the record, he RT'd a bunch of (positive) fan commentary and then seems to have settled down to non-sequitours and monosyllables. He may or may not have been a hesher / Wayne Campbell for Halloween, I couldn't really tell from the picture he tweeted.

- Ryan was the Fantastic Mr. Fox, evidently a last-minute choice enabled by how, I quote, "I dress like that already anyway."

- Z was Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas. She did tweet a picture of herself planting a kiss on an un-named, masked Jack Skellington, followed (the next day) by one of herself standing next to Ryan. A random Jack and spontaneous pose? A new gentleman friend? I don't know. (People Jack is not: Greenwald (he went as a pot plant); Runion (he's too scruffy right now, and Jack was cleanshaven under his mask); or Jason Boesel (also bearded at the moment).) I am, for right now, chalking it up to a random Jack and moving on.

- Panic! costumes: Brendon - Jesus; Spencer - Ron Burgundy (complete with brandy!); Dallon - Eric Nally; Ian - Hit Girl.

- Post- Halloween, Ryan shared a song: Val Stoecklein- French Girl Affair, and also appreciated Tom Waits' new record. He also RT'd JWalk's album announcement; shared a weird video that involved someone vacuuming up a snake; and continues to be really, REALLY into hockey.

- Z is apparently tweeting for JJAMZ at @jjamzmusic. Latest comment: ""Ruth's Chris" is the opposite of "cellar door"" All I can tell you is Ruth's Chris is a fancy-ass steakhouse with multiple locations, and so is indeed quite unlike a cellar, just in general. IDK if she had a specific cellar in mind or what.

- Ryan has apparently been working in music with both Greenwald and another friend, called Trucifer. It is not clear if said music is Greenwald's, Ryan's, or for another project entirely.
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
still not a proper update, but, some highlights noted for the record:

* There was a brief period last weekend when we thought Brendon might have gotten malaria in Indonesia, but, luckily he didn't.

* Greenwald has finished his solo record; he and Ryan Ross continue to be working on songs (per Ryan), but it isn't clear if they are his songs, or Ryan's songs, or what is going on.

* On a related note, Ryan mentioned he was looking up the word 'Rapscallion" in the context of choosing a band name. The definition is "a disreputable person; rascal or rogue" (c. the Free Dictionary).

* One of the songs they were working on apparently sounds like they're "going to face the boss." (Not The Boss, Ryan explained. More like Bowzer or Dr. Robotnik. So, no Springsteen, rather, a the dude from Sha Na Na or a cartoon mad scientist. I'm deeply intrigued already!)

* Didier Wampas, who Ryan worked with on HIS (Didier's) solo project, is putting the record out on Oct. 25. In France. But the singles are available on American iTunes, so maybe we'll get the record too. Also, he (Didier) will be touring on the record in November, again, wait for it, in France. Ryan Ross may or may not be with him. French internet, we rely on you for a full report! (And pictures!)
sailorstkwrning: (Default)
this is in no way a proper update, but I am noting here for the record the Brendon Urie announced his engagement on 9/19/11 with a Princess Bride reference, i.e. the "Mawwaige" speech.

Though I suppose technically Zack announced it the night before with his "he asked, she answered" tweet, which was purported (by him!) to be him trolling us with a movie quote. The source, if there is one, is somewhat drowned by fannish chatter, so if anyone knows what it is, pls holler.

Thus far, JWalk has had no comment (no surprise there; he didn't get or give any birthday greetings this year) and Ryan has only tweeted At a cry fair on the clown farm which . . . uh, okay, Mr. Ross. Right. Swapping the key phrases around, i.e. on a clown farm at the cry fair makes even less sense, so i think it was meant to be read as written.

Incidentally there is such a thing as a Clown Farm. It's in Alberta, Canada and seems to be very fancy clown school. There's also a Baby Huey (cartoon) episode called Clown On The Farm from, er, 1952, so maybe he's just noodling around YouTube.

Baby Huey, incidentally, is a duck in 1) a diaper 2) a bonnet and 3) a belly shirt.

Dallon, Ian and Spencer have also been quiet, but then again they are all in Indonesia.

On the subject of birthday greetings, they were exchanged between camps for both Ryan's birthday and Spencer's. Hilarious note: Ryan apparently still has the picture of Spencer wearing nothing but goggles/a snorkel.

Also, for Ryan's birthday, Keltie posted a picture of a tiny, tiny bb!Ryan in a karate outfit, and everyone teased Ryan gently about being an "old man". (At age 25. If he's old, I think I might be dead.)

[ profile] prettykitty_aya made me an amazing mix to go with Drowning Lessons . It's called Landlocked, and the tracklisting is as follows:

1. a body goes down (duncan sheik)
2. put there by the land (great lake swimmers)
3. flames (VAST)
4. vivaldi's the four seasons (autumn) - 2. adagio molto (orpheus chamber orchestra)
5. where the fearless hide (evaline)
6. nightingale (norah jones)
7. a minor incident (badly drawn boy)
8. timshel (mumford & sons)
9. are we afraid (toad the wet sprocket)
10. a camera lens and careful days (lydia)
11. weapon (matthew good band)
12. beethoven's symphony no. 9 (seattle symphony)
13. hard earned smile (david lamotte)

A lot of the music was new to me, and it fits perfectly. Thank you so much!!
