Travie kicked off this week with some general ruminations on a variety of topics, diverged briefly into a multi-tweet statement about KRS-One disrespecting Def Jam/the Beastie Boys at the Hip Hop Honors award, reiterated his commitment to being part of the On the Beaten Track program, and then talked a little bit about recording and posted a lot of pictures of his dog. Who is rapidly growing into his ears, so I can't call him an Unimpressed Alien any longer. Travie wrapped up the week/reporting period with, as far as I can tell, buying a lot of plastic crap in a gas station en route to a show in Vermont.

The Beastie Boys tangent stood out the most, for me, mainly because of Travie's comment that he and Wale were "tykes" when it came out. They, or at least Travie, were 5; I was 11. Fight For Your Right To Party is actually one of the first videos I can remember specifically watching on MTV, back when MTV actually showed videos. (The other one is Welcome to the Jungle.)

I guess this specifically gave me pause as I don't normally feel the age difference as much with Travie as I do the others. In this case we both have the Beastie Boys as a cultural touchstone, but for him they have, in a way, always been there, always been part of rap/hip-hop, whereas I remember when they were new and shocking and everyone was appalled. (In fairness, Fight For Your right was one of their lighter songs; they've revised some of their lyrics over the years.)
